The Key to Anti-Aging and Brain Health

neuro health, anti-aging, exercise

Now this might be a shock but…

The key to anti-aging and maintaining brain health is actually really simple.

It’s exercise

Okay, bold claim, I know. But it’s true!

How does that even work?

During exercise the brain releases Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). BDNF stimulates neuronal growth, especially in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.

Science-speak simplified: this means that brain cells/connections are growing in areas important for memory, learning, and executive/cognitive functioning.

Exercise can thus improve your learning and cognitive functioning!

People fear degrading their brain and succumbing to diseases like Alzhiemer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis.

The best way to maintain a healthy, flexible brain is to use preventative care. This includes exercise!!

The benefits of exercise doesn’t stop at brain health.

Exercise is also great for boosting your mood!

This has been shown for a mere 10 minute walk. Just walking for 10 minutes can produce a statistically significant boost in your mood (this is your sign to go outside today!)

Exercise releases dopamine, serotonin, and noradrenaline, all major contributors to a more positive disposition.

Exercise doesn’t have to be something you dread, either. Finding the right exercise for you, that makes you feel good, is an essential piece of the puzzle.

Some forms of exercise you could try:

  1. Lifting- ok, I’m biased, but I love to lift. You may not! That’s okay, explore the next few.

  2. Yoga- there’s power yoga, hot yoga, hatha flow yoga, there’s even goat yoga. There’s truly a type of yoga for everyone. It’s a great way to get in tune with your body.

  3. HIIT- 30 minutes of high intensity interval training will surely make you sweat in no time.

  4. Running- on a trail outside or on the treadmill inside, both are great cardio.

  5. Boxing- insane cardio + a confidence booster.

  6. Walking- you don’t have to strain yourself all the time if that’s not your style, but taking time to go out and move your body will have incredible benefits.

  7. Cycling- they have some crazy spin classes out there these days, and they are extremely motivating.

  8. Pilates- joining a club for this sort of exercise can create a really supportive environment. + this actually is really challenging.

There are so many other forms of exercise to try out. This is just a short list to get the thoughts flowing.

Feed your mind and body with exercise. It takes care of your brain more than you know! Also, try switching things up once in a while to keep your brain and body flexible.

Prioritize your health by exercising, your brain will thank you now and later in life! :)
